‘A Minecraft Movie’ shares first choice for Steve before casting Jack Black
‘A Minecraft Movie’ star Jack Black acting skills receives harsh criticism from viewers
A Minecraft Movie's original choice for the role of Steve has been revealed, and fans are feeling deprived of what could have been a much better film.
Reported by Puck, Matt Berry, the British star of sitcoms Toast of London and What We Do in the Shadows, was set to originally star in the film.
However, he dropped out due to scheduling conflicts caused by 2023 actors’ strike in Hollywood.
As per the Independent, despite the film becoming record-breaking box office success of 2025, it has received harsh criticism and negative reviews specially on Jack Black’s performance.
A reporter of the outlet said that the actor looked like "a desperate clown at an under-attended children’s party."
Fans are now mourning the loss of first choice for the role, complaining that the film could have been much better if Berry played the role. Especially if he could have uttered the popular Minecraft phrase "chicken jockey."
On X (formerly Twitter) one user wrote, "I’m definitely not saying 'chicken jockey' in the voice of Matt Berry right now…"
"Torn between 'Matt Berry’s too good for that' and 'I want to hear him say chicken jockey,'" another stated.
One more echoed the sentiment, "Laughing really hard imagining Matt Berry saying ‘chicken jockey’ so maybe it would’ve been a good movie if this happened."
“Hearing 'chicken jockey' come out of matt berry’s mouth would’ve absolutely grilled me HELLO???," another pointed out.
Black stars in A Minecraft Movie alongside Jason Momoa, Danielle Brooks, Jennifer Coolidge and Emma Myers.
A Minecraft Movie was premiered on April 4.
