A Dutch couple suffering from dementia and muscular disease, decided to get euthanized together while holding hands, ending their long lasting relationship on a bittersweet note, Futurism reported.

Monique, 74 and Loes, aged 88 years, bid goodbye saying "I love you," one last time.

Netherlands became the first European country to legalise voluntary assisted death, 20 years ago, followed by Belgium who legalized it in 2002.

In the last few years, people opting for voluntary suicide has risen, in 2018, former Dutch prime minister Dries Van Agt decided to die by euthanasia alongside his wife.

Euthanasia remains illegal in the majority of the United States with only 10 states, including Washington DC, have legalised medical aid in dying (MAID), a practice in which a physician can choose to end the life of a patient with a terminal illness with a lethal dose of a prescription drug.

In Canada, the practice has been legal since 2016. However, experts have argued expanding the government's MAID program to people who have mental illnesses. Last month, a parliamentary committee recommended delaying the expansion for a second time to 2027.
