Brahim Diaz secures Real Madrid victory in Champions League clash against Leipzig
Real coach Carlo Ancelotti praised his team particularly Lunin who he said played a great game, the best game for Real Madrid against Leipzig
Real Madrid's Brahim Diaz stole the spotlight with a dazzling solo goal, securing a 1-0 victory against RB Leipzig in a thrilling Champions League last-16 first-leg encounter.
The Champions League match, filled with twists and turns, leaves the Spanish giants in a favourable position for the return leg on March 6.
Leipzig started energetically, with an early disallowed goal adding to the drama. Striker Benjamin Sesko's apparent opener was ruled out after a VAR review, leaving both teams locked in a tense battle. Real gradually found their footing, and the 24-year-old Diaz, filling in for the injured Jude Bellingham, showcased his brilliance in the 48th minute.
Picking up the ball near the sideline, Diaz navigated past three defenders with skillful precision, cutting into the box before unleashing a stunning curling shot past goalkeeper Peter Gulacsi. The Red Bull Arena fell silent as Real Madrid took the lead against the run of play.
Real coach Carlo Ancelotti acknowledged the challenges his team faced, saying, "It was difficult for us, that's how it is here. Lunin played a great game, the best game. We were dangerous in transitions, we could have scored more but we could also have tied. This is a small advantage."
Goalkeeper Andriy Lunin, standing in for the injured Thibaut Courtois, played a pivotal role in preserving Real's lead, making crucial saves throughout the second half. Ancelotti emphasised Lunin's exceptional performance, noting it was the best game the goalkeeper has played for the club.
Leipzig fought back aggressively, creating chances, but Lunin's heroics denied them an equaliser. Despite the narrow victory, Ancelotti remained pragmatic about the outcome, saying, "It's an advantage, but no one had the idea that we would kill the tie here. It's a good result, but there are another 90 minutes left. In our stadium, everything is different."
In the aftermath of the match, Brahim Diaz reflected on his match-winning goal, saying, "I'm intuitive. I saw Vini (Vinicius Junior) and wanted to give it to him, but in the end, I took the shot. It was a nice goal."
As the teams prepare for the return Champions League leg in Spain, the stage is set for another captivating clash between Real Madrid and RB Leipzig, with Diaz's solo brilliance etched into the memory of fans and opponents alike.
