Why Veterans Day 2023 parades were cancelled in these US states?

Veterans Day 2023 parades and events have been cancelled in Houston, Texas and Columbus, Ohio as a result of rain and further unlikely weather forecast for Saturday.

The customary pre-parade Commemoration Ceremony will still be held indoors at the Legacy Hall chamber of the Houston City Hall building, located at 900 Bagby St.

The historic signing of the World War I Armistice, which was supposed to signal the end of hostilities, on November 11, 1918, at 11am, will be honoured at the event.

According to a press release, the Veterans Day event will start at 10am on Saturday in remembrance of the courageous men, women, and families who battled and gave their lives in defence of liberty and independence. 

Quindola Crowley, a former Lieutenant Colonel from the United States Army, will also be the main speaker during the ceremony.

Since 1987, the downtown Columbus streets have been the scene of the Columbus Veterans Day procession. However, it was cancelled this year.

“We’re disappointed. It’s something that several of us have been doing since the 80s, 90s and early 2000s,” said In-coming Co-President of MilVets, Carrie Killingsworth.

The MilVets board announced on social media that the march was cancelled this year due to low participation and the absence of corporate funding during the epidemic.

“It’s disappointing but at the same time there’s not a viable option at this point to hold a parade without a better level of support financially and also people just don’t come to parades in downtown Columbus like they did in the past,” said Killingsworth.

The procession has been cancelled for this year, but no plans have been made for next year.
