Six more infants die of malnutrition in Tharparkar
SUKKUR: At least six infants have died over the last 24 hours in Tharparkar district due to viral infections and malnutrition, hospital sources confirmed on Saturday.
The infants died at the Mithi Civil Hospital and other government hospitals in the region, raising the toll to 47 this month and over 155 this year alone, the health department sources confirmed.
The children were admitted to the government-run hospitals but the parents complained of lack of facilities, including critical life-saving drugs.
They demanded proper medical facilities near their villages so they are spared the miles-long trip to Mithi town in the scorching heat. Despite repeated attempts, neither the district health officer nor the civil surgeon of Mithi Civil Hospital could be contacted for comments on the unabated deaths of infants in Thar. Following the Supreme Court suo motu notice last year over the death of five children in Mithi Civil Hospital, the local health officials are under instructions not to share any details with the media.
