3rd RMC International Scientific Conference concludes

The concluding ceremony of the third Rawalpindi Medical College International Scientific Conference held here on Saturday at New Campus of RMC after nine scientific sessions held on the second day of two-day scientific program of the conference.

On Saturday, a total of 62 scientific papers were presented in the nine scientific sessions under the titles of global mental health, pathology, cardiology, surgery and allied specialties, ENT and Pharmacology, medical education, orthopaedics and neurosurgery, paediatrics and community medicine/public health.

Earlier on the first day of the scientific program of the international conference, a total of 21 scientific papers were presented in three scientific sessions under the titles of Medicine and allied specialties, Surgery and allied specialties and Gynaecology and Obstetrics.

All the scientific sessions were chaired by esteemed professors who were the pioneers in medical education and all specialties from across the nation.

It is important that a total of 73 pre-conference workshops were held from February 18 to March 23 while a total of 12 scientific sessions were organized on March 24 and 25 in connection with the third RMC international scientific conference.

On Saturday, during the scientific session on global mental health, Professor Tayyeb Tahir (UK) presented a paper titled ‘A trip down a lane called Sherlock’ while Professor Imran B. Chaudhry (UK) presented scientific paper on ‘Neuro Inflammation: New Horizons in Prevention & Treatment of Schizophrenia’. Paper on ‘Cultural Adaptations of Psychosocial Interventions for Patients with Self Harm’ was presented by Dr. Nasim Chaudhry (UK) and a paper on ‘Frontotemporal Dementia’ was presented by Dr. Saba Khalid (Australia). Dr. Salma Siddiqui presented her paper on ‘Traumatic distress: a rising public health challenge’ while Professor Mowadat Hussain Rana presented paper on ‘Global Mental Health and Medical Education: The Pygmalion Kiss’. Head of the Institute of Psychiatry Professor Fareed A. Minhas presented a paper on ‘Cognitive Dysfunction in Depression’.

During the scientific session on pathology, Dr. Hassan Abbas Zaheer presented a paper on ‘Blood safety systems reforms in Pakistan’ and a paper on ‘Diagnosis of Thalassiemia’ was presented by Maj. Gen Suhaib Ahmed. Professor Nadra Mamoon presented paper on ‘Immuno histochemistry: Panacea or pandora’s box’ and Dr. Lubna Zafar presented paper titled ‘Challenges in Hemophilia Care in Pakistan’.

During the scientific session on cardiology, Dr. Imran Saeed Ali presented scientific paper titled ‘Burden of Ischemic Heart Disease -- Targeting the culprits’. Maj Gen. Sohail Aziz from AFIC presented paper titled ‘Primary Angioplasty in Acute Myocardial Infarction’. Paper titled ‘Carotid Artery Stenting’ was presented by Maj Gen. Imran Fazal from AFIC while a paper ‘Acute Stent Thrombosis’ was presented by Maj Gen. Tahir Iqbal. Dr. Amir Ayub (UK) presented a paper on ‘Management of Heart Failure Update: Changing trends in Management’.

During the scientific session on Community Medicine, Professor Syed Arshad Sabir presented a paper on prevalence of “Persistent Low Grade Morbidities” in a section of youth population living in urban area while Dr. Asif Maqsood presented a paper titled ‘Public health response to HIV Epidemics among Injecting Drug Users in South Asia: A Systematic Review. Dr. Babar Tasneem Rao presented a paper titled ‘Health system level barriers in implementation of the expanded program on immunisation (EPI) in Pakistan: A qualitative descriptive study’.

During the scientific session on paediatrics, Dr. Muhammad Almas Hashmi presented papers on Risk Factors for Viral Hepatitis B and C Infection in Children and Effectiveness and safety of Sofosbuvir in Hepatitis C Infection in Children. Dr. Moazama Ahmed presented a paper on ‘Prevalence of work related cervical pain in school teachers’.

The Young Researcher’s Forum was also introduced for the first time at the third RMC International Scientific Conference that comprised of two events; Poster competition and Paper presentation competition among students of RMC.
