DG Khan police demonstrate exceptional resolve, operational brilliance
Operations were conducted deep within the rugged terrain of the Katcha area of Taunsa
DERA GHAZI KHAN: Dera Ghazi Khan, a strategically significant district in South Punjab, finds itself confronting a dual threat - organised crime and cross-border terrorism. Yet, amid these mounting challenges, the district police, under the leadership of District Police Officer (DPO) Syed Ali, have demonstrated exceptional resolve and operational brilliance. In a region historically marred by militancy and lawlessness, the recent law enforcement achievements are nothing short of commendable.
Over the past few weeks, three major encounters have taken place, resulting in the elimination of high profile fugitives wanted in multiple serious criminal cases. These operations were conducted deep within the rugged terrain of the Katcha area of Taunsa, a region long considered a haven for hardened criminals and militants. In one such operation, the police neutralised two accused involved in the killing of two officers. While initial reports suggest the assailants died in an internecine feud, their elimination has undoubtedly removed a serious threat to the law enforcement personnel. However, the bigger challenge lies in the volatile belt along the inter-provincial border especially the 13km stretch west of Taunsa, which intelligence reports suggest remains under the influence of extremist elements aligned with the banned outfits. These groups have launched repeated incursions into Punjab, targeting police check posts in areas such as Vehova and Lakhani.
Just last week, the militants attempted another infiltration across the border, but this time they were met with swift and decisive resistance. Under the direct command of DPO Syed Ali, a counter offensive was launched, resulting in the killing of four terrorists, while the rest were forced to retreat. So far this year, more than 10 such attacks have been successfully thwarted, which is a testament to both vigilance and tactical acumen.
This success, however, is not without its constraints. The region’s treacherous geography, coupled with limited resources and supply chain challenges, poses significant operational hurdles. Yet, the Dera Ghazi Khan police have remained steadfast. Their strategy built on intelligence-led operations, proactive patrolling and community engagement has turned them into an unyielding barrier against the spread of terror.
Dera Ghazi Khan’s geography only compounds the complexity of this security landscape. To the west, it shares borders with Balochistan’s Musakhel and Barkhan districts, while to the north lies the tribal belt of Dera Ismail Khan and the former FATA region. These connections, while critical from a socio-economic standpoint, also serve as potential conduits for cross-border infiltration. In this backdrop, maintaining peace is not just a policing challenge, it’s a matter of regional stability. What sets DPO Syed Ali apart is his leadership style. He is not confined to administrative offices or ceremonial duties. Whether it’s an anti-terror operation or an assault on a criminal hideout, he is seen leading from the front, a rare but much needed trait in Pakistan’s policing culture. This visible, on-ground leadership inspires confidence among the police officers and reassures the public that the guardians of their security are not merely reactive, but also proactive and deeply invested.
In such times, the support of local communities becomes indispensable. The residents of Dera Ghazi Khan must recognise the scale of this challenge and stand united with their police force.
