JAMRUD: The cops in Khyber tribal district have been directed to wear the official police uniform instead of the traditional shalwar Qamees, which had been the norm until now.
A ceremony was held at the Police Lines in Jamrud on Monday to distribute the official police uniforms to the cops deployed in the Khyber tribal district. Senior police officials were also in attendance.
This marks the first time that policemen from the Khyber district wore the standard shirts and trousers of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Police. Before the merger of the former Federally Administered Tribal Areas (Fata) with Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, security duties in the region were handled by the Khassadar force.
Following the merger, Khassadar personnel were absorbed into the provincial police and additional cops were recruited to support regular policing. Police stations were subsequently established across the tribal districts.
Before 2018, the tribal areas did not have a formal police force, court system, or patwar (land revenue) system in the tribal districts. The region was governed under the Frontier Crimes Regulation, which was abolished after the merger, extending the 1973 Constitution of Pakistan to the area.
