PSW, DRAP launch digital COPP to increase pharmaceutical exports

KARACHI: In its continued efforts to enhance Pakistan’s export competitiveness by digitalising cross-border trade processes and information flows, the Pakistan Single Window (PSW), in collaboration with the Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan (DRAP), has launched the Digital Certificate of Pharmaceutical Product (COPP), required by importing countries for the export of pharmaceutical goods.

In addition to COPP, the DRAP Clearance Gateway has also begun offering electronic versions of the free sale certificate, good manufacturing practice (GMP) certificate, and the no objection certificate (NOC) for exports. This initiative aims to streamline regulatory procedures, reduce delays and align the pharmaceutical sector with global best practices.

According to a statement issued on Thursday, all certificates issued through the PSW platform are secure, electronically verifiable and embedded with a unique QR code for instant authentication.

The service eliminates inefficiencies associated with paper-based documentation, enhances regulatory compliance and boosts transparency and trust in Pakistan’s pharmaceutical exports -- particularly in highly regulated markets such as the EU, US, and other international destinations.

Exports remain a cornerstone of Pakistan’s economic development, with strategic initiatives like Uraan Pakistan rolled out to support businesses engaged in cross-border trade. Among key export sectors, the pharmaceutical industry has emerged as a high-potential contributor. In FY 2023-24, pharmaceutical exports reached approximately $341 million, reflecting a 3.9 per cent increase from the previous year.

It is aligned with the prime minister’s vision of a digital Pakistan.”

CEO of DRAP Dr Obaidullah Malik also highlighted the importance of the development. “The launch of the Digital Certificate of Pharmaceutical Product (COPP), free sale certificate, GMP certificate, and export NOC through the DRAP clearance gateway reflects our commitment to modernising regulatory practices and strengthening trust in Pakistan’s pharmaceutical sector. This milestone underscores our dedication to ensuring the safe, timely, and transparent availability of quality medicines, while enabling exporters to meet international compliance standards more efficiently.”
