Ex-federal law minister Khalid Anwer passes away
Renowned lawyer and former federal law minister Khalid Anwer passed away in Karachi at the age of 86 on Thursday. He had been ill for some time and had been under treatment at a private hospital in the city.
He was the son of Chaudhry Muhammad Ali, who had served as prime minister in the 1950s. Anwer’s funeral prayers will be held at Sultan Masjid in DHA on Friday (today) after the Juma prayers.
He was born in Delhi on November 4, 1938. He obtained his BSc (Honours) and LLB degrees from the University of Punjab. Later, he obtained the degree of BA (Honours) from St John’s College University of Cambridge in the UK.
He started working in the legal profession as a high court advocate in 1962. He gained prominence in the law profession in a short time. He also worked for the AK Brohi Law Firm. He later served as the federal law minister in the second tenure of then PM Nawaz Sharif from 1997 to 1999. Anwer also served as a senator for six years. During his stint as the law minister, he introduced a number of reforms to improve the legal profession.
