LAHORE: Pakistan’s cycling team continued its impressive run at the Asian Road Cycling Championship in Thailand, with Ali Ilyas claiming silver in the Men’s 35-39 category on Thursday, bringing the nation’s total medals tally to an unprecedented six.
Ilyas, facing stiff competition from 18 elite cyclists including two strong Thai teams, showcased exceptional tactical awareness in the 64.2-kilometre road race. His powerful sprint finish secured second place, adding to his earlier gold medal in the Individual Time Trial (ITT). The championship has proven particularly successful for Pakistan’s women cyclists. Rabia Gharib of SSGC made history by becoming the first Pakistani woman to win gold in the women’s master road race. She also secured silver in the ITT event, demonstrating remarkable consistency across disciplines. Zainab Rizwan of Bikestan Cycling Academy Karachi has also left her mark on the championship, claiming two bronze medals - one each in the ITT and road race events.
Pakistan’s impressive medal tally now stands at Gold medals 2: Men’s ITT (Ali Ilyas) and Women’s Master Road Race (Rabia Gharib).
Silver 2: Women’s ITT (Rabia Gharib) and Men’s Road Race (Ali Ilyas).
Bronze 2: Women’s ITT and Road Race (both Zainab Rizwan).
