CPJ, HRCP demand govt take notice of threats to Azaz Syed
Azaz Syed is facing severe threats following a broadcast on his show, “Talk Shock
ISLAMABAD: In the vibrant, often tumultuous capital of Pakistan, a prominent journalist known for his incisive reporting and commentaries has become the latest target of backlash by the supporters of a religio-political party.
Azaz Syed, an award-winning journalist with a strong reputation both locally and internationally, is facing severe threats following a broadcast on his show, “Talk Shock,” which was critical of a religio-political party, Tehreek-e-Labaik Pakistan (TLP), without explicitly naming it.
Mr Syed's critique, though veiled, did not escape the notice of TLP’s supporters. Soon after the broadcast, an onslaught of intimidation and harassment was unleashed against him. The campaign inundated him with life-threatening messages and incessant phone calls.
The harassment extended to his digital platforms as well; his WhatsApp account was suspended due to bulk spam messages, effectively cutting off a vital communication link.
The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) quickly condemned the targeting of Mr Syed. In a forceful statement, the organisation demanded swift action from Pakistani authorities to investigate these threats, hold accountable the perpetrators, and ensure the safety of Mr Syed and his family.
“Authorities must act now,” the CPJ emphasised, noting that such intimidation tactics pose a threat not only to individual journalists but also to the press freedom that underpins the country's democracy.
The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) also voiced its concern, stressing that the threats be taken seriously. The HRCP called for the protection of Azaz Syed by state entities and for a rigorous investigation into those inciting violence.
“This is not just about one journalist,” the HRCP stated, highlighting the broader implications for free expression in Pakistan.Despite the pressures, Azaz’ss resolve remains unshaken.
Supporters from the realms of journalism and civil society have rallied, underscoring the power of unity and defiance in the face of growing extremism.
Veteran Journalists have also denounced the threats.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, veteran journalists Hussain Naqi, Nasir Zaidi,Shahzada Zulfiqar, Nasir Malick Dr Touseef Ahmed Khan,Dr Nazir Mehmood, Asmatullah Niazi,Ashraf Khan, Waris Raza, Matiullah Jan, Sohail Sangi, Adnan Rehmat, and Wajahat Masood noted with concern that police have not registered a case. The hate mongering has jeopardized Aizaz Syed’s life and his family’s safety.
The veteran journalists urge the government to take serious notice and appropriate action against those who are openly threatening media community.
