Downpour in various districts of Sindh disrupts daily life
Hyderabad: Hyderabad city and its adjoining areas received significant rain on the night between Saturday and Sunday, which inundated many low-lying areas.
Streets and alleys of Hyderabad, Latifabad and Qasimabad were flooded. While it was raining, the Water and Sanitation Agency (Wasa) announced that the Hyderabad Electric Supply Company (Hesco) system had been affected, due to which the power supply to the pumping stations had been suspended greatly slowing the drainage work.
Hyderabad Mayor Kashif Shoro and Deputy Commissioner Zainul Aabdin Memon visited a few pumping stations, including Latifabad, and oversaw the drainage of rainwater through standby generators.
After a few hours, most of the feeders were restored by Hesco, and the drainage started from the pumping stations. In Qasimabad, Latifabad, Hali Road and other densely populated areas, rainwater was cleared with the help of special vehicles by Sunday evening.
Due to intermittent rain, the roof of a house in Latifabad No 6 collapsed, causing injuries to two persons, Parvez and Naseem. They were shifted to the Civil Hospital. A buffalo died from electrocution as it touched bare wires in the Hussainabad Pathan Goth area.
According to Hesco spokesperson Muhammad Sadiq Kunbhar, several feeders in Umerkot, Mirpurkhas, Tando Allahyar, Hyderabad, Jamshoro, Sehwan, Manjhand, Thatta, Badin, Tando Muhammad Khan and Matiari tripped during the rain.
It rained 60mm in Dadu, 52mm in Mirpurkhas, 35mm in Tando Jam, 25mm in Sakrand, and 14mm each in Shaheed Benazirabad and Padeedan.
Water accumulated on roads in Kotri town, Jamshoro Gate area, and Sehwan Road in Jamshoro, due to which the movement of vehicles remained slow.
The rain that started on Saturday night in the suburbs, including Hala and Saeedabad of Matiari district, continued till 10 o'clock on Sunday morning, due to which roads and streets were filled with water and electricity supply was suspended.
Tando Muhammad Khan, Tando Allahyar, Badin, Sajawal, and Thatta were also affected by rains on Sunday.
More than 10 villages and standing crops came under water due to a 100-foot crack in the Rohri Canal near the village of Malan Makhan near Tando Adam.
