FAISALABAD: On the 1st day of the Punjabi month ‘Chet’ today (March 14), Punjabi Culture Day will be celebrated across Faisalabad with an exuberant showcase of its heritage.

Dr Toheed Chattha, a history department educator at Government College University Faisalabad (GCUF), unveiled the traditional Punjabi Chadar worn by the residents of Harappa. After four years of research and leveraging digital printing technology, Dr Chatha has meticulously resurrected this cultural treasure collaborating with artisans spanning from Attock to Rahim Yar Khan.

Of particular note is a design that transcends regional boundaries, underscoring its profound historical significance and widespread cultural resonance. The Chadar is decorated with motifs inspired by Harappa pottery and utensils, depicting Punjab’s meandering rivers and architectural motifs of antiquity. Ghulam Jilani, Director of Jilani Textile Industry, expressed immense pride in contributing to this historic project by translating the design onto fabric through digital printing.

He fervently hopes that fellow Punjabis will embrace and propagate this design. Notably, he emphasized that the copyright for this design is freely accessible to the public, encouraging widespread adoption without charge. The reintroduction of this traditional Chadar stands as a testament to Punjab’s enduring cultural legacy, offering a poignant opportunity for contemporary society to reconnect with its roots.
