We can always count on Sara Rohale Asghar’s exquisite ensembles with an array of flattering silhouettes and styles like mermaid gowns, trailing shararas and structured couture pieces. The Lahore-based designer has a penchant for churning out instant classics. You! What motivated you to come into this field of design and craft?

Sara Rohale Asghar: I always had a passion for creativity which pushed me into getting a formal degree in fashion design from PIFD (Pakistan Institute of Fashion Design) back in 2007. As a fashion graduate, it was only natural to end up in the relevant industry.

You! What type of clothes do you design for women?

SRA: I like to consistently bring the wow factor as I am primarily a bridal couture designer, but we plan to branch out and venture into pret as well.

You! What do you like best about designing clothes?

SRA: I like the creative aspect of designing the most.

You! What was the first outfit that you designed?

SRA: I am sure it must be something for my elder siblings’ wedding.

You! How would you define your own sense of style?

SRA: Simple and classic.

You! What is the one advice that you give to your client?

SRA: Don’t follow the herd. One should dress up according to body size and what looks good on you.

You! What are your favourite fabrics to work with?

SRA: I like all sorts of fabrics ranging from jamawaars to French tissues and laces. It all depends on what I am making and the colours I am dabbling with. I love to work around hues that are universally flattering with the right details, can make a subtle but lasting impression.

You! In your opinion what is the biggest mistake a person can make while dressing in Pakistan?

SRA: Wearing ill-fitted clothes is a mistake that is made all over the world and not just in Pakistan.

You! What are the difficulties faced by designers in getting their work done?

SRA: Power shortfalls and labour attitude are some of the issues we face while getting work done.

You! How long does it usually take for you to design an outfit? How do you prepare for a fashion show?

SRA: For me, I can think of a design while doing something totally different and non-artistic. A design just comes to you, it’s not a deliberate process. Preparing for a fashion show is a lengthy process. I start with an inspiration and take it forward from there.

You! What trends do you think will persist in the new season?

SRA: Winter is on its way and the time is ripe to step up your game. As the temperatures drop, the focus is shifting from the pastels to the vibrant colour palette of coral pinks, ruby reds, cobalt blues, siege greens, deep purples and magentas that can be glammed up with signature velvets. I like to experiment with cuts with a classic and ‘less is more’ approach. Winter season calls for a variety of lengths and layers that can be paired into personified bridal looks for women.

You! Do you think there is potential for aspiring designers in the fashion industry and, what advice do you have for them?

SRA: There is always room for fresh blood in any given industry. The one advice I want to give would be to get a proper degree before entering the field. It makes the work so much better and crisp. Technical know-how is a must.
