Dive into these standout picks that prove women are the ultimate stars of the show…
Directed by Sean Baker, ‘Anora’ follows a young woman, played by Mikey Madison, whose life takes an unexpected turn when she marries the son of a wealthy Russian oligarch. What begins as a whirlwind romance soon becomes a high-stakes battle for control and survival. Madison’s gripping performance has earned her an Oscar award for Best Actress, and Baker’s signature raw, immersive storytelling adds depth to the film’s exploration of agency, power, and personal reinvention. Premiering at Cannes, ‘Anora’ won the prestigious Palme d’Or, further cementing its status as a must-watch for audiences drawn to bold, character-driven narratives.
Set in a Himalayan boarding school, this coming-of-age drama by Shuchi Talati unravels the delicate and often tumultuous journey of teenage self-discovery. The story follows Mira, a 16-year-old girl, as she begins to explore her desires and independence, all under the watchful eye of her protective yet enigmatic mother. The film doesn’t shy away from the complexities of growing up, particularly from a female perspective, as it examines generational expectations, personal autonomy, and the evolving dynamics between mothers and daughters. Having made a powerful impact at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival, ‘Girls Will Be Girls’ has been lauded for its unfiltered and authentic storytelling.
Blending elements of psychological horror and body transformation, ‘The Substance’ is a genre-defying tale led by Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley. Directed by Coralie Fargeat, the film introduces a mysterious medical breakthrough that allows individuals to create an improved version of themselves. However, the process comes with unexpected and terrifying consequences. Moore delivers a striking performance as a woman desperate to reclaim control over her life, while the film’s eerie atmosphere and thought-provoking themes of identity, beauty, and societal expectations make it a compelling and unsettling experience.
Amy Adams takes on one of her most unconventional roles in ‘Nightbitch’, a darkly comedic film based on Rachel Yoder’s novel. The story follows a former artist who has given up her career to care for her young son but soon begins to suspect she is transforming into a dog. As her reality becomes increasingly surreal, she grapples with the isolation and frustrations of motherhood in ways that are both deeply relatable and wildly absurd. With Adams’ impeccable ability to balance humour and emotional depth, ‘Nightbitch’ serves as a sharp satire on domestic life, maternal identity, and the struggle to maintain individuality in a world that often defines women by their roles at home.
Maria Tran stars as a highly skilled assassin in ‘Echo 8’, a high-energy action thriller that she also co-directed. The film follows her character as she is torn between completing a dangerous mission and protecting those she cares about. With intense fight sequences, strong character development, and a fresh take on the action genre, ‘Echo 8’ breaks barriers by placing a powerful female lead at its centre. Tran’s direction brings a unique perspective to the story, ensuring that ‘Echo 8’ is more than just an adrenaline-fueled thriller - it’s a testament to the strength and complexity of female action heroes.
This one deserves a special mention. Even though the series released in 2020 but I had the privilege of viewing it in the last year, which is why it has made it to the list. Inspired by the life of Madam C.J. Walker, ‘Self Made’ is a Netflix limited series starring Octavia Spencer as the trailblazing entrepreneur who became America’s first female self-made millionaire. The series delves into her struggles against racial and gender discrimination, her relentless ambition, and her revolutionary impact on the beauty industry. Spencer’s powerful performance captures Walker’s resilience and vision, offering an inspiring portrayal of a woman who defied expectations and redefined success on her own terms. ‘Self Made’ is a compelling story of determination, business acumen, and the power of lifting others up while breaking barriers.
