From Nuclear Science to Leather Bags - That’s a fascinating shift. How did you go from working with atoms to creating luxurious leather accessories?
I started my career in nuclear science, driven by a fascination with science’s societal impact. However, after spending years in this field, I took a break for personal reflection. That time away allowed me to explore a new side of myself, and I realised I wanted to create something of my own - something connected to my evolving identity.
When and how did you start your venture?
I began conceptualising hand-embroidered leather bags in 2020, and we officially launched Ella Jade as a brand in 2022. The idea was easy at first, but the practical side was exhausting. Developing procedures and training artisans proved to be a challenge.
Which side of your brain gets more attention now - the logical scientist or the creative designer?
Both sides are crucial. The scientist in me ensures data-driven decisions that ground my business, while the designer fuels my passion and allows me to connect with people on a deeper level. Together, they balance each other to build a brand that’s both smart and soulful.
What’s the biggest challenge you’ve faced as a woman in the fashion industry, and how did you turn it into an opportunity?
The biggest challenge was overcoming stereotypes and earning credibility in a male-dominated industry. Coming from a scientific background, I had to prove my creative worth. But I was fortunate to have a network of strong women who inspired and encouraged me to break barriers.
What’s the story behind your most popular bags?
Our most popular bags hold deep significance for me. While visiting Southern Punjab, I discovered intricate traditional embroidery by local women artisans. Their artistry inspired me to incorporate their work into our leather bags. Each bag tells a story of cultural heritage and craftsmanship.
How do you see the role of women in shaping the future of fashion and entrepreneurship in Pakistan?
We’re seeing a shift in Pakistan where women are stepping into leadership roles, breaking traditional barriers. Their resilience and innovation are reshaping industries, and I’m excited to see more women leading the way in fashion and entrepreneurship.
What advice would you give to other women thinking about entering entrepreneurship?
Find mentors and build a network for support. Be financially savvy, as luxury brands can be capital-intensive. Most importantly, stay authentic. The luxury market values originality, so embrace what makes you unique. It’s a journey, but with passion and resilience, it’s incredibly rewarding.
What unique strength do women bring to the world of fashion and business?
Women bring an innate sensitivity to detail and an emotional understanding of what luxury truly means. They have an eye for personal touches that make products feel special, which is essential in luxury fashion.
What’s been the most empowering moment of your journey as a woman entrepreneur?
Meeting the Scottish Ambassador was a powerful moment. I was able to represent my brand while also sharing my advocacy for causes like preeclampsia awareness. It reinforced the idea that our influence as entrepreneurs can extend beyond business to social impact.
If your life had a tagline, what would it be?
‘Rediscover, Reinvent, and Rise.’ After stepping away from my career, I had to rebuild my identity. It wasn’t just about resuming my profession; it was about reclaiming my passion and rising to create something meaningful.
What advice would you give young women?
Go for it. Don’t let anyone make you feel like you don’t belong. Believe in your vision and abilities, surround yourself with supportive people, and know that you have a unique perspective to offer.
How do you ensure your business empowers women?
At Ella Jade, empowering women is central to our mission. We collaborate with women artisans from Southern Punjab, and I prioritise creating a supportive environment within my team, hiring and mentoring women to help them grow professionally and personally.
What are the positive points of being economically independent?
It gives you control over what matters most in your life - freedom to make decisions and shape your own path.
What’s the most important advice you can give to women?
Don’t let anyone tell you that you are too loud, too opinionated, or too ambitious.
What does a typical day look like for you?
My day starts early with meditation, followed by a workout. I spend time with my family, then focus on work. In the evening, I ensure I have quality family time, creating balance between work and personal life.
What’s the most exciting part of your work?
The creative process - bringing ideas to life and seeing them transform into products that connect with people.
What gives you inner satisfaction?
Advocating for causes that matter to me, like preeclampsia awareness. Using my platform to raise awareness and make a difference in people’s lives brings me true fulfillment.
What is your biggest indulgence at home?
Creating a comforting atmosphere with good music, delicious food, and shared laughter.
What is your most treasured possession?
My jade bangles, a gift from my late father.
What did you like to read when you were a little girl?
Adventure novels like The Count of Monte Cristo, Journey to the Center of the Earth, and Sinbad the Sailor.
What’s the biggest relationship lesson you’ve learned so far?
The importance of respect and nurturing every connection. Showing respect and valuing others’ individuality creates trust and lasting relationships.
How do you balance family life and work?
I set clear boundaries and prioritise family time, ensuring that when I’m with them, I’m fully present.
What are your future plans for expanding your work?
I hope to represent Ella Jade globally one day, expanding our reach and impact on a larger scale.
