Starring transgender activist Kami Sid, a Pakistani short film, called Rani, has been shortlisted for screening at multiple upcoming international film festivals. Written, produced and directed by Hammad Rizvi, the film follows the life of a Pakistani transgender woman who sets out to take care of an abandoned baby.

The film will have its North American premiere at the prestigious Newport Beach Film Festival in Orange Country, California, on April 30. This will be followed by a screening at the CAAMFest on May 15 in San Francisco. CAAMFest celebrates Asian American film, music and food and will run for 15 days, from May 10 till May 24.

Rani is a heartwarming tale of a Pakistani transgender woman, who is a toy vendor and lives in the tough streets of Karachi. In an attempt to save an orphaned infant, she becomes a mother but that brings with it a whole lot of troubles for her that she must fight. The film delivers a strong message as far as the rights of transgender community are concerned.

It marks transgender model Kami Sid’s acting debut while she shot to fame with a fashion campaign prior to the film. Since then, she has been an active participant in social campaigns, supports social causes and doesn’t shy away from speaking against injustices.
