Amidst the controversy surrounding Padmavati, Deepika Padukone, who essays the role of Rani Padmavati in the film, recently received threats of physical harm from Karni Sena leader, Mahipal Singh Makrana. He said they will chop off her nose if the film isn’t banned and she doesn’t refrain from “inciting public sentiments”.

According to a senior police officer, Mumbai Police has increased the security of the actor post the threat. “The Mumbai Police have increased actor Deepika Padukone’s security after the outfit issued the nose chopping threat,” Joint Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) Deven Bharti told PTI.

He also informed that they will also provide security at the actor’s residence as well as her office in Mumbai. Last week, Sanjay Leela Bhansali was also warned and threatened after which he was provided complete security too.

“We have already provided security to Sanjay Leela Bhansali as he was found to be at risk, and now a security assessment of Deepika Padukone is being done,” Bharti added. “If she is found to be at risk, adequate steps will be taken. However, nobody’s threat can be taken at the face value until the government assesses it. Deepika Padukone had on Tuesday hit out against those protesting the release of Padmavati and reportedly said that “we’ve regressed as a nation.”

Padmavati has been under constant scrutiny ever since it was announced while the filmmaker is being accused of distorting history. Starring Padukone, Ranveer Singh and Shahid Kapoor, the period drama is slated to release on December 1 but Karni Sena group seeks a ban on the film.
