As the film industry grows, so do the discussions revolving around Pakistani films. Much is being said about the state of local films that have been released this year, such as Thora Jee Le, Raasta, Chalay Thay Saath, Mehrunisa V Lub U, Yalghaar and Project Ghazi (which was supposed to release this weekend) but the one common complaint that comes across in all these films is that producers have not yet mastered the art of creating a captivating trailer.

Nadeem Beyg comments on the trailers of films Yalghaar and Project Ghazi and explains how they could have been made better.

Instep caught up with director Nadeem Beyg to get his opinion on where our film trailers are lacking and how they can be improved.

“World over, people who make films do not make trailers,” he shared. “In our country, it should be the same because the director is very close to the film and every shot. So we like to put everything in it. But the trailer has to have a story. I think trailers that don’t work in Pakistan are those which don’t provide a hook. That’s very important. That is what was missing in Yalghaar’s trailer as well.”

Did he think that that was missing from Project Ghazi’s trailer as well? “It was but they were capitalizing more on the superhero angle.”

How involved is Beyg with his own films’ trailers? “I make the structure and then hand it over to the editor. I usually have two different editors because the film’s editor also becomes absorbed in the film, like the director. I just narrate the story and the rest is the editor’s job.”

Speaking of trailers, there is one trailer that recently caught everyone’s attention but not in a good way. Syed Noor’s film Chain Aye Na has received a lot of criticism from critics and masses alike and the industry seems to be divided over what to expect from Shahroz Subzwari and Sarish Khan, the upcoming film’s lead actors.

“I don’t want to talk about the quality of the film,” Beyg commented. “Syed Noor has done a lot for Pakistani cinema. He has given us many great films. Let’s suppose that even if it’s not a good film, one shouldn’t completely disregard all the work that he’s done. I’m in no position to comment on his work because I look up to him and his work.”

It should be noted that Nadeem’s Beyg upcoming film, Punjab Nahi Jaungi, has a good trailer, which strangely is not being played in theatres alongside trailers of Na Maloom Afraad 2, releasing at the same time. But that’s another discussion, for another day.
