KARACHI: The US has banned import of shrimps from Pakistan for not installing turtle excluder devices in fishing nets.
The US Food and Drug Administration (USFDA) claimed that the ban, came into effect since May 1, had been imposed because the Pakistani fishing industry failed to ensure installation of turtle excluder devices in fishing nets.
Pakistan also faced a similar ban from Saudi Arabia last year.
A turtle excluder device or TED is a specialized device that allows a captured sea turtle to escape when caught in a fisherman's net. TED in fishing nets also helps in maintaining ecological balance.
