It was the year 2020. Kanye West was seen furiously yelling at Chance the Rapper – a close music associate – when the latter visited the Chicago rapper's compound in Wyoming to check on him after being concerned over alarming reports on his collaborator's mental health challenges.

The clip of the heated exchange was part of a documentary about the making of Ye's album Donda by filmmaker Dame Dash.

Now, looking back at the incident, Chance – whose real name is Chancelor Jonathan Bennett – said he was “really, really sick at the time".

He pointed out to critics that West is human and had his own personal struggles at the time.

“It’s easy sometimes when you’re not a part of a situation; you have nothing to gain or lose, to be like, ‘I would have slapped Ye’ or ‘I would have s***ed Ye,'" the Chicago rapper told The Deep End with Lecrae.

“But everybody’s a human. I’ve seen him in a lot of vulnerabilities and real genuine moments that even his other friends probably haven’t seen.”

This is not the first time Chance has reflected on the confrontation West had with him.

Previously, discussing The Morning Hustle, he said, 'Viewers, particularly critics, viewed the exchange in a vacuum and were bereft of full context because of a short clip.'

“I did come out there to check on my friend,” he said, adding, "I and a lot of other people still have love for Ye. But he’s human; he’s not perfect.”

Despite Ye going off on him, Chance said, “At the end of the day, I definitely love the dude. That’s my guy."

“It sucks that sometimes people can exploit a moment that is a genuine moment," he shared.

West and Chance have been long-time collaborators, ranging on multiple albums and several songs.
