Tom Cruise’s “respectful” decades old relationship with British royals took centre stage.

According to Radar Online, Tom’s long standing friendship with the British royal family dates back to his close bond with the late beloved Princess Diana whom he met in 1992 at the premiere of Far and Away. However now the connection has extended to her son Prince William and his wife Princess Kate.

As recently, the royal couple made an appearance at the London premiere of Tom's newly released movie, Digger, where the Hollywood actor was seen interacting and offering Princess Kate his hand.

An insider told the outlet that "Tom's connection with the family didn't begin at a gala or through some calculated Hollywood networking exercise. It goes back to Diana and a period when William and Harry were still children. That history gives the relationship an emotional dimension that is difficult to manufacture.”

For those unaware, Tom has previously revealed that Princess Diana made a visit to his Mission Impossible set along with little William in 1995.

Insiders continued, "William remembers Tom as somebody associated with a very happy experience involving his mother. The visit to the Mission: Impossible set became one of those childhood memories that survived everything that followed, particularly the tragedy of Diana's death.”

Noting, "Over the years, Tom has remained respectful rather than trying to exploit that association. William genuinely enjoys his company, while Catherine has always found him charming and considerate. There is an ease between them now that comes from knowing each other over a long period."

"Tom understands the boundaries around the royal family. Offering Catherine his hand might create photographs and headlines, but within their relationship it is simply characteristic of how he behaves around her. There is genuine warmth there," they further noted.

However, at this year’s BAFTA Film Awards, the Royal Prince expressed his admiration, saying, "I've got to be careful because I'm a little biased to a particular person. But Top Gun 2, for instance, is one of the most incredible films I've watched in a long time."

Now, a source revealed that "There is inevitably plenty of Top Gun talk,” between the acclaimed actor and Prince William, “but their conversations go much further than movies. They'll compare experiences, discuss different aircraft and happily disappear down an aviation rabbit hole.”

Adding, "It's one of the things that transformed an acquaintance into a genuine friendship.”

"Flying gives them common ground completely removed from royal engagements or Hollywood premieres – and both can talk about it for hours," the source added further.

It is pertinent to mention here that Princess Diana died in a tragic car accident on August 31, 1997.
