Trump diesel announcement fails to change Germany’s stance on Russia
Trump’s decision to lift sanctions on Russian diesel exports has shocked European governments
On Saturday, Germany said it would maintain sanctions against Russia over its war on Ukraine after US President Donald Trump’s announcement that his administration implemented a temporary suspension on Russian sanctions.
Government spokesperson Stefan Korenelius said in a statement, “ The federal government has taken note of the US decision relating to Russian diesel deliveries.”
On Germany’s position he said: “The federal government remains committed to the decisions on sanctions against Russia and is working with its European partners on further sanctions.”
He further said Germany’s support for Ukraine was steadfast and that diplomacy will persist in finding a resolution. On Friday, Trump said that Russia had pledged to release diesel to international markets to cut fuel costs. He further said his administration's temporary sanctions waiver on Russian fuel was designed to deprive Moscow of revenue for its war against Ukraine.
According to Reuters, prices for diesel used for agriculture have climbed to historical highs presenting a substantial hazard to Trump’s fellow Republicans ahead of the November 3 congressional election that will determine whether they retain power in Congress.
