WhatsApp Beta to let you pin 4 messages: Report

Three pinned messages have been the ceiling on WhatsApp for years, and busy group chats have felt that limit fast. According to WABetaInfo, there is an upcoming beta update that will increase the number limit up to four pins for users who do not want to remove any pin yet.

The process of pinning new messages has remained the same as it has always been. It requires you to press and hold a message, select pin, and choose a time for visibility.

When it has been pinned, it will be added to three other pins in the message bar at the top of your chat window. Users can then press on the pinned bar to view all four pins.

The extra slot matters more in groups than in one-on-one conversations, where three pinned messages were often already sufficient.

Active groups juggling multiple ongoing topics, like an event planning thread or a shared household chat, tend to fill their pinned slots quickly, forcing someone to remove one message just to add another. Admins retain control over who can pin messages at all, based on existing group permission settings.

Notifications indicating that a message has been pinned have now been introduced by WhatsApp as soon as one pins any message, unless of course the group chat is muted. The company has also begun testing pinning messages in channels.

Overall, this trend shows that WhatsApp believes that the option for pinned messages holds potential and that the company wishes to invest further in this feature.

The four-message limitation is available only to a few Android beta testers as of yet.
