British army halts major training exercises to save money: Key details revealed

The British Army has been ordered to halt major military exercises in a bid to save £30 million, sparking concerns that the decision could weaken the UK’s military readiness.

Commanding officers have been instructed to cease large-scale military exercises involving a large number of troops except for units preparing to deploy or serving in a quick-reaction force.

This means armor-building exercises and attack helicopters training are among those being cancelled, as the Army shifts its attention toward smaller-scale warfare involving drones.

According to The Times, the Royal Tank Regiment was due to begin six weeks of combat exercise in Wales next week following the training being cancelled just days before it started.

The cuts are driven purely by financial constraints and are separate from spending on major equipment programmes such as warships and fighter jets.

Meanwhile, defense chiefs have warned commanders to manage messaging around the cancellations with care, citing concerns over how the reductions might be observed by Britain’s adversaries.

The Army says £2 billion has been allocated to revolutionize training over the next 15 years, arguing that the investment requires rapid focus on mission-critical activities and operational effectiveness.

Nonetheless, British forces are entering into a new phase in Estonia with Challenger 2 tanks being withdrawn as the deployment transitions next April to a 1,200-strong mobile force anti-armour capabilities and integrated unmanned systems.
