Piers Morgan reacts to Messi’s GOAT claim against Cristiano Ronaldo: ‘Shameless bragging’

Piers Morgan in a recent post has taken an aim at Lionel Messi for settling GOAT debate in a widely-circulating video.

The Argentina star announced his retirement on August 31 following Argentina's defeat to Spain in the 2026 World Cup final.

Lionel Messi's announcement that he would be hanging up his boots for the national team sparked a wave of global tributes, but a celebratory promotional campaign with Budweiser managed to upset prominent British correspondent Piers Morgan.

The video was about settling the “GOAT debate,” demonstrating the supremacy of Messi over others in the football world.

Taking to X, Morgan responded to a video from Messi’s Instagram and called him out for shameless bragging.

“‘Mr Humble’ drops the most arrogant piece of shameless bragging in the history of sport. Hilarious.”

However, it was Morgan first who started and settled this GOAT debate. In his verdict, he designated Cristiano Ronaldo as GOAT.

On Tuesday, Morgan posted on X, “Breaking: Lionel Messi retires from international football, after scoring 125 goals for the Argentina national team, placing him second on the list of highest international goalscorers.”

"Cristiano Ronaldo has scored 146 goals for the Portugal national team, the highest figure in the history of football at the international level. This settles the debate over who is the best player in history."

Morgan has consistently been critical of Messi while simultaneously being vocal in his praise for Ronaldo over the last few years.
