Musk's xAI takes aim at Claude Code with the release of Grok Build

In a latest tech update, Elon Musk's xAI has officially entered the competitive agentic coding space with the rollout of Grok Build, a powerful terminal-native command-line interface (CLI) and developer tool. 

Designed to take over the end-to-end edit-run-test loop, it allows developers to execute complex software engineering tasks directly from their command line using natural language prompts.

Unlike chat assistants that immediately write or alter code, Grok Build starts in a dedicated Plan Mode. It maps out changes step-by-step, allowing developers to comment on, modify, or approve the strategy before a single file is touched.

For massive codebases or heavy workflows, Grok Build can delegate complex tasks to up to eight specialized subagents running simultaneously.

These can operate within isolated Git worktrees to prevent concurrent edits from colliding.

Grok Build is xAI's terminal-based AI coding agent designed for professional software engineering and complex codebase tasks.

It functions as a command-line interface (CLI) and terminal UI (TUI) that lets developers plan, search, and build code directly from their shell.

Before touching any code, Grok Build enters a Plan Mode where it maps out steps, allowing you to comment on, rewrite, or approve the execution strategy.

For massive workflows, it can delegate heavy tasks to multiple subagents running simultaneously in isolated Git worktrees.

It integrates seamlessly with existing tools, automatically picking up project configuration files like AGENTS.md, custom hooks, plugins, and Model Context Protocol (MCP) servers.

Beyond its interactive Fullscreen Terminal UI (TUI), Grok Build supports a headless mode via the -p flag for automated scripts and CI/CD pipelines, alongside Agent Client Protocol (ACP) support for custom orchestration apps.

xAI open-sourced the CLI on GitHub, and paired the launch with a dedicated coding model (grok-build-0.1 / Grok 4.6 backend) available via the xAI API for developers building custom agent harnesses.

Grok Build is currently available in beta to high-tier subscribers (such as SuperGrok and X Premium+ users), positioning xAI as a direct terminal-native rival to tools like Claude Code and Codex.
