Trump eyes FIFA boss Gianni Infantino for UN secretary-general post

In a recent news circulated through multiple outlets, the U.S. President Donald Trump wants to nominate FIFA President Gianni Infantino to be the next Secretary-General of the United Nations after 2026 World Cup.

According to a report published by the New York Post, Trump believes that the Swiss soccer administrator is universally respected and possesses a unique ability to bring people together.

The decision follows a period of deepening cooperation between the two leaders leading up to the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which concluded on July 19.

The 56 years old Infantino, grew close to Trump through organizing this year’s World Cup, with the Swiss-born soccer administrator bending over backward to charm and include Trump, even giving him FIFA’s inaugural Peace Prize in December.

Trump believes that Infantino “is respected by everyone around the world, and recognizes he has a special ability to bring people together,” a source close to the president told The NY Post.

To secure the position, the FIFA boss would need to win the endorsement of the 15-member Security Council— where the five permanent members hold vetoes followed by confirmation by the General Assembly.

While It’s unclear if Infantino wants the job and to what extent Trump has discussed the topic with him.

Although the report remains unconfirmed by the White House and has not been publicly addressed by President Trump.

The news arrives at a pivotal moment for global diplomacy, as the UN prepares to elect its next secretary-general later this year to replace Portugal’s António Guterres, who will step down at the end of December upon completing his second term.
