NFL players have launched a major coordinated social media campaign demanding a permanent grass field after the 2026 World Cup. For years, NFL team owners have contended that sustaining natural grass indoors is logistically impossible.

Currently, seven NFL stadiums in the US have grass fields installed for the duration of the tournament to address the demands of organizers FIFA.

They are all set to revert to synthetic turf after the World Cup although 92% of NFL players prefer natural grass. According to the NFL Players Association, artificial turf is considerably more demanding on the body than grass.

In this connection, Indianapolis Colts Jonathon Taylor said: “Natural grass isn’t out of reach. Prioritizing players shouldn't be either.”

An NFLPA statement reads: “It’s no longer a question of capability; the technology exists, the expertise exists and the resources exist to install the high-level grass fields that our players overwhelmingly prefer.”

“We have seen the meaningful investment made to meet the standard for international athletes and global events.”

Nonetheless, the NFL players association is of the view that the NFL players who compete on these fields help refund stadiums and should drive the league’s dedication to quality grass fields.
