Argentina has accused a British warship of an irregular maritime transit into its waters just hours after the country’s victory over England in the World Cup semifinal as geopolitical tensions between the two nations flared.

In a statement on Wednesday night, Argentina’s foreign minister, Pablo Quirno accused the Royal Navy of an incursion into Argentine waters. He claimed HMS Medway had entered Argentina's waters earlier in July without submitting a formal notice to the government.

On social platform X, Mr Quirno said: “In diplomacy, work is not shouted about like goals, but we are driven by the same conviction: the pride of being Argentine and the constant defense of our interests.”

He also accused Britain of escalating tensions in the South Atlantic, claiming that the invasion was the latest in a long series of similar acts.

The statement concludes by reaffirming Argentina’s “legitimate and imprescriptible sovereign rights” over the Falkland Islands.

HMS Medway is primarily a Batch 2 River-class offshore patrol vessel that is stationed in the Falkland Islands. This comes after Argentina players provoked an argument that read “Las Malvinas son Argentina's” which translates to “The Falkland Islands are Argentinian” after their 2-1 victory against England.

Business secretary Peter Kyle labeled the banner “completely inappropriate” appealing to FIFA to further investigate. In this connection he said: “I had left and gone to bed before the banner came onto the pitch, but I saw the images this morning and of course it is entirely inappropriate.”

Downing Street reiterated the prime minister's spokesperson stance on Monday stating: “The UK’s position is clear, and the islanders have repeatedly expressed their wish to remain a British territory and their right to self-determination is paramount.”

“The Falkland Islanders are British with the right to determine their own future.”

Nonetheless, the banner was displayed by the players as they relished their win; however, they could now face disciplinary proceedings from governing body FIFA for prohibited displays on the pitch.
