Zelensky’s bottle cap moment goes viral: EU rule behind the debate
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s simple act at a European summit sparked online reaction
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has drawn the attention of millions of social media users with a single act at a European summit.
In a widely circulated video during a press briefing with European leaders, the President was seen opening a plastic water bottle by twisting off the cap and placing it on the table, rather than leaving it attached to the container.
While the gesture went largely unnoticed by those in attendance, it sparked a flurry of online discussion, as the act technically defied a well-known European Union regulation regarding packaging design.
This incident drew the attention of social media users as they joked about Zelensky’s mistake. Some noted that although Ukraine is actively looking to integrate with the EU, it may “have missed a briefing on environmental regulations.”
Some users jokingly called this equivalent to “serious crime” while quipping that the EU sanctions might be coming for the country.
One user commented, “He just moved back Ukraine’s EU accession by 15 years.”
Another one humorously wrote, “No more support for him from the EU! How he dares.”
At the heart of this viral moment lies the European Union’s governed Single-Use Plastics Directives (SUPD), mandating that caps and lids be physically attached to beverage containers.
Since July 2025, it has been illegal to place single-use plastic beverage containers on the EU market unless their caps or lids remain attached to the container throughout its intended period of use.
The purpose of introducing this law is to improve the environment and protect marine biodiversity by tackling plastic pollution.
However, Ukraine is not part of the EU, so the EU’s packaging rules do not apply to the country.
