Oilers expected to consider Mattias Janmark trade after Colton Dach deal

The Edmonton Oilers could trade veteran forward Mattias Janmark as the club looks to resolve a crowded forward group before the start of the 2026-27 NHL season.

After re-signing Colton Dach to a two-year contract worth $2.4 million, Edmonton now has 15 NHL-ready forwards, despite being expected to carry only 13 on its opening day roster.

According to the Edmonton Journal, the Oilers could keep Mathieu Joseph as an extra forward while assigning Dach to the AHL, as the 23-year-old does not require waivers.

However, Edmonton Journal reporter Jim Matheson believes the club values Dach's physical style and wrote that “there’s a better chance” the Oilers decide to trade Janmark instead.

Janmark is entering the final season of his three-year contract worth $4.3 million, carrying an average annual value of $1.4 million.

Moving the 33-year-old would help reduce the forward logjam while creating additional salary cap flexibility. According to PuckPedia, the Oilers currently have just under $5 million in projected cap space with a full roster.

Janmark's 2025-26 campaign was disrupted by a shoulder injury. He appeared in only 43 games before undergoing surgery and has not played since 25 February.

No trade has been announced, and any move involving Janmark remains speculation at this stage.
