Why Zinedine Zidanes son Luca chose to play for Algeria over France

Algeria goalkeeper Luca Zidane is attracting attention at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, not only for his performances but also because he is the son of France football legend Zinedine Zidane.

The 28-year-old, who plays for Spanish club Granada, is the second-oldest of Zinedine Zidane's four sons and the only goalkeeper in the family.

Despite his famous French roots, Luca chose to represent Algeria at international level after switching his sporting nationality last year.

He is eligible through his grandparents, who were born in Algeria.

Speaking to The Athletic, Luca said his decision reflected his upbringing and family heritage.

"We’ve lived in an Algerian culture since we were small,” Luca Zidane told The Athletic.

“It’s an honor to play for Algeria. The final decision was mine, but I spoke with my family, my parents, my brothers, my grandfather. My father was happy, he knew it was something I wanted to do. To be able to play in a World Cup is a dream for any kid.”

Luca has returned to Algeria's starting line-up for the World Cup knockout stage and will be aiming to help the Desert Foxes progress further in the tournament.

His decision to represent Algeria has made him one of the most talked-about players at this year's World Cup, combining one of football's most famous surnames with a strong connection to his family's Algerian heritage.
