Kawhi Leonard set for stunning Raptors return in blockbuster NBA trade
The move would reunite Leonard with the franchise he led to its first NBA championship in 2019 before leaving for the Clippers in free agency
The Toronto Raptors have reportedly agreed a blockbuster trade to bring Kawhi Leonard back to Canada, with the deal now awaiting final medical approval.
According to ESPN's Shams Charania, the Los Angeles Clippers will send the seven-time NBA All-Star to Toronto in exchange for Brandon Ingram, Gradey Dick, two unprotected first-round picks, a first-round pick swap and two second-round selections.
“Kawhi views this as an opportunity to retire in Toronto,” Charania said on ESPN.
Sportsnet's Michael Grange reported that both teams are still reviewing the players' medicals before the trade is officially completed. Grange also reported that the Raptors are expected to offer Leonard a two-year maximum contract extension once the deal is finalised.
Leonard, 35, enjoyed one of the best seasons of his career, averaging 27.9 points, 6.4 rebounds and 3.6 assists across 65 games.
He also earned All-NBA Second Team honours after finishing seventh in MVP voting.
The move would reunite Leonard with the franchise he led to its first NBA championship in 2019 before leaving for the Clippers in free agency.
The Clippers, meanwhile, appear to be continuing their rebuild after a disappointing campaign, while Toronto hopes Leonard's return can strengthen a squad that reached the playoffs last season before losing to the Cleveland Cavaliers in the first round.
