Iraq star Zidane Iqbal carries Pakistan’s hopes into FIFA World Cup history
Born to a Pakistani father and Iraqi mother, Iqbal chose to represent Iraq internationally despite being eligible for England and Pakistan
Iraq midfielder Zidane Iqbal is set to make history at the 2026 FIFA World Cup by becoming the first player of Pakistani heritage to feature in the men's tournament.
According to BBC Sport, the 23-year-old proudly represents both sides of his family heritage by wearing Iraq’s flag on one football boot and Pakistan’s flag on the other.
Born in Manchester to a Pakistani father and Iraqi mother, Iqbal chose to represent Iraq internationally despite being eligible for England and Pakistan.
Iraq secured their place at the World Cup after ending a 40-year absence from the competition, with Iqbal playing an important role in qualification.
Speaking to BBC Sport about discovering the significance of his achievement, Iqbal said: “To be honest, I didn’t even know it myself.”
The midfielder revealed he learned about the milestone through social media before sharing the news with his father, whom he credits as a key influence in his football career.
Iqbal began his development at Manchester United's academy and later became one of the few British South Asian players to appear for the club in the UEFA Champions League.
Seeking regular first-team football, he moved to Dutch side FC Utrecht, where he has continued his progress.
His performances, including a goal during Iraq’s qualifying campaign, helped the national team navigate a demanding 21-match route to the World Cup.
