YouTube is tightening its grip on AI-generated content. Starting immediately, the Google-owned platform will automatically detect and flag videos created with photorealistic generative AI tools even if creators don't disclose the use themselves.

In the last one year, it was mandatory for YouTube users to self-report any content creation involving the use of generative AI technology.

However, in recent times, with the development of advanced image and video synthesis technology, it has become impossible to distinguish machine-produced content from human-produced content. This makes the previous practice of self-reporting ineffective.

The most notable examples include Google’s Veo 3.1 and ByteDance’s Seedance.

In cases where YouTube detects the use of photo-realistic AI in a video, it will add a label on the video without requiring any effort from the creators.

It should be noted that creators will have the right to contest any labels that they think are placed incorrectly, according to YouTube's statement regarding the issue. The company also assured that the label does not imply any type of penalty for videos that are flagged.

Joining Spotify and other companies, YouTube has decided to use AI detection automatically. With all the synthetic content that is becoming increasingly popular, there is immense pressure on the platforms to stay transparent and allow a new creator economy using AI to develop.
