Savanah Guthrie and NBC announce new game show based on 'Wordle'
Jimmy Fallon is slated to join Savanah Guthrie for a brand new game show
NBC has just greenlit a brand new TV adaptation of the popular New York Times game “Wordle” and fans can expect contributions by the Today show host but also by newly minted executive producer Jimmy Fallon.
The game show is set to go live sometime in 2027 and the announcement comes via an official description from NBC that promises that the TV version of the game “challenges players to solve five-letter word puzzles in a supersized battle of smarts, speed and fun. It builds on the way the puzzle community engages with Wordle every day — solving together, sharing wins, debating strategies and cheering one another on.”
According to their plans “now, that style of play comes to life as the most-obsessed and competitive players will team up in squads and go head-to-head in the ‘Wordle’ arena, playing for an incredible cash prize.”
Fallon has also spoken out since the news dropped and it shows him saying, “I feel very honored to be working with Savannah Guthrie on this show.”
“Savannah has that rare combination of intelligence, charm and warmth that makes everyone feel instantly welcome. And she obviously knows how to host a show. I am SUPERPROUD and HAPPY and I think we developed a SOLID GAMER for PRIME-time.”
A casting call has even gone live, according to Variety and even the New York Times’ company head of games Jonathan Knight says, “‘Wordle’ is already a social and shared experience. People don’t just play it, they talk about it, compare results and solve together.”
This is why, in his mind developing the game show “was about translating the actual experience of playing ‘Wordle’ with your friends, and delivering something that ‘Wordle’ fans will expect. That meant being thoughtful about the show’s gameplay structure, the pacing and how players interact.”
