UFC 328: Sean Strickland defeats Khamzat Chimaev to reclaim middleweight title
Strickland reclaimed the 185-pound title he first won in September 2023
Sean Strickland pulled off a major upset on Saturday, reclaiming the UFC middleweight championship by defeating the previously unbeaten Khamzat Chimaev via a razor-close split decision after five rounds.
Two judges scored the bout 48-47 in his favor, while the third had it 48-47 for Chimaev. With this win, Strickland (31-7) became a two-time champion, regaining the 185-pound belt he originally won in September 2023, by upsetting Israel Adesanya.
The loss is the first in the professional career of Chimaev (15-1), who entered the octagon as a heavily favored, undefeated champion.
The fight followed a highly personal and “ugly” buildup. Strickland had labeled Chimaev a “coward” stemming from a 2022 training incident where he accused Chimaev of bullying less experienced fighters.
Due to the animosity-which included Chimaev kicking Strickland during a promotional face-off-the UFC implemented extra security, including police presence and separate hotels for the teams.
Despite the pre-fight vitriol, the two showed sportsmanship afterward; Chimaev even assisted in placing the championship belt around Strickland's waist.
“I want to apologize," Strickland said. "I went too hard. I'll admit it. I respect all you guys [from Chimaev's native Chechnya]. He's a f---ing savage. I try to sell these fights for you f---ers. I appreciate you.”
The fight opened as many expected, with Chimaev securing a takedown within the first round; he spent much of it on Strickland's back, threatening multiple rear-naked choke attempts.
In the second round, the tide turned completely. Chimaev appeared physically exhausted, losing his explosive wrestling power. Strickland’s trademark jab and cardio became the deciding factors.
He out-landed Chimaev in total strikes 163-to-115, staying composed even as Chimaev marched forward with heavy power shots.
The Newark crowd was firmly behind the American, with thunderous “USA” chants echoing through the Prudential Center as Strickland surged late in the fight.
