Ohio primary elections 2026: Trump-backed Vivek Ramaswamy clinches nomination for governor

The unofficial results from Tuesday's primary elections marked a significant shift in the Rust Belt landscape toward Donald Trump’s America First wing. 

Health-tech entrepreneur and former presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy won the Republican nomination for Ohio governor, defeating car designer Casey Putsch.

A staunch ally of Donald Trump, Ramaswamy benefited from a “complete and total endorsement” from the President, who praised him as “Young, Strong, and Smart” following the win. 

Ramaswamy will face Democrat Dr. Amy Acton, the state’s former public health director in the general election. Acton, who ran unopposed, is centering her campaign on affordability, while Ramaswamy has signaled he will attack her record on COVID-19 restrictions.

During a victory speech, Ramaswamy thanked Ohio voters “for getting us to this point”, adding, “The real destination is in November.”

Ramaswamy cleared a crowded field earlier this year, leveraging $25 million of his personal fortune to bankroll a campaign centered on the largest property tax rollback in Ohio history.”

In Indiana, a high-stakes primary served as a test of Trump’s influence after several Republican state senators blocked his late-2025 redistricting plan as reported by the BBC.

At least five of the seven targeted incumbents lost to Trump-backed challengers; longtime lawmakers like Jim Buck and Travis Holdman were among those defeated. 

State Sen. Greg Goode was the only targeted Republican confirmed to have survived the purge during the race for Sen. Spencer Deery remains in a razor-thin “too-close-to-call” margin.

The primary stems from a December 2024 clash where 21 Senate Republicans joined Democrats to kill a gerrymandering effort that Trump claimed was necessary to secure the US House majority in the 2026 midterms.

The recent results underline the continued dominance of the Trump wing within the GOP. In Ohio, the ascension of JD Vance to the Vice Presidency left a power vacuum that Ramaswamy has now successfully filled. 

Both the Ohio and Indiana races suggest that 2026 campaigns will remain heavily focused on the political and economic lingering effects of the pandemic response.
