Lena Dunham breaks silence on her much-talked-about 2026 Met Gala look
Lena Dunham marked her return to Met Gala red carpet after seven years
Lena Dunham has finally broken her silence on her much-talked-about 2026 Met Gala look.
Marking her return to the biggest fashion event after seven years, the 39-year-old American writer and director flaunted a sequined and feathered red gown.
Seeking inspiration from Artemisia Gentileschi’s painting Judith Slaying Holofernes, Dunham trusted Italian fashion designer and creative director of Valentino Alessandro Michele to design her look for the Met Gala’s “Fashion Is Art” theme in 2026.
She told Vogue about writing Michele “a long, elaborate fan letter about what his work” as it holds a special place in her heart and she was “lucky enough that he responded and said that he was up for the task.”
Dunham “shared that inspiration with Alessandro,” highlighting that violence is the main point of the painting, and she wanted the same depiction in her ensemble.
However, Michele’s brain “works in the most magical ways, rather than leaning into the Renaissance garments or the swords or any of it, he was attracted to a particular blood spatter on the neck of Holofernes,” she explained.
The American Horror Story star gave her seal of approval to Michele’s creative angle, as she said, “Obviously, that’s what I was going to choose.”
“I love how playful he is while also having this incredible amount of technical skill, and also having a sense of humor and also taking things very seriously. I feel this dress embodies all of it,” Lena Dunham remarked.
