One injured after a United Airlines plane strikes delivery truck while landing at Newark airport

A United Airlines passenger jet struck a delivery truck while landing at Newark Liberty International Airport on Sunday, leaving the driver with minor injuries.

According to New Jersey state police, the landing tyre and underside of the Boeing 767 arriving from Venice, Italy, hit the tractor trailer as the aircraft approached the runway. Officials said the plane also clipped a light pole, which then struck a nearby Jeep.

The truck driver, identified as Warren Boardley, suffered cuts to his arm and forearm from broken glass. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey said he was treated at hospital and later discharged.

A dashboard camera inside the H&S bakery truck captured the moment of impact.

The footage, widely shared online, showed the driver reacting moments before the collision sent debris and shattered glass through the cab.

“Everybody – the driver and everybody on the plane – should be very fortunate,” Chuck Paterakis, vice-president of transportation for Schmidt Bakery and owner of H&S Family of Bakeries, told WABC.

“Because it could have been the opposite of what happened, and a little help from God went a long way tonight for everybody on the plane, and including the driver.”

The National Transportation Safety Board said it has launched an investigation into the incident.
