Germany pivots to European defence strategy as US reduces troops

Defence Minister Boris Pistorius argues that the US troop withdrawal should be the catalyst for Europe to bolster its military capabilities. 

The Pentagon has announced the withdrawal of 5,000 US soldiers from Germany, the United States’ largest military hub in Europe. 

The drawdown is seen as a direct result of escalating tensions between Washington and Brussels over the ongoing war in Iran and aggressive trade tariffs. 

As reported by Reuters, the withdrawal includes a full brigade and the cancellation of a long-range fires battalion. Berlin has called this a significant blow to European deterrence against Russia. Defense Minister Boris Pistorius stated that this “salvo” from Washington must spur Europe to strengthen its own defence.

“We Europeans must take on more responsibility for our own security,” Pistorius said, adding, “Germany is on the right track" by expanding its armed forces, speeding up ​military procurement and building infrastructure.

He plans to increase the Bundeswehr’s active-duty force from 185,000 to 260,000. Despite pledges to take on more responsibility, experts warn that tight budgets and vast military capability gaps mean it will take years for Europe to achieve security independence. 

While troops are leaving, critical hubs like Ramstein Airbase and Landstuhl Hospital remain vital for supporting active US combat operations in Iran.

The Pentagon’s decision to withdraw from Germany includes the cancellation of the planned long-range fires battalion deployment. This is a major blow to deterrence against Russia, occurring just as Europeans have begun developing their own long-range missiles to fill the gap.
