Tesla Semi finally enters mass production: Specs, range, and price breakdown
Tesla first introduced its semi-truck concept in November 2017
The Tesla Semi electric truck has finally entered mass production with a “high-volume assembly line”, as confirmed by the American company on X.
The mass production of the first units has started at Gigafactory at Nevada after a long delay since the debut of the semi truck concept in 2017. The announcement marks a game-changing moment for Tesla Semi in the highly competitive EV landscape.
According to Dan Priestly, Semi Program Director, till now Tesla has built a few hundred Semis but the assembling was carried out on low-volume lines. But, now the company is determined to ramp up production especially at a time “when economics are right” and “there is ample demand.”
Tesla is also planning to invest more than double its capital spending this year over $20 billion. The primary focus of this investment includes the Semi factory, Cybercab, the Optimus robot, and lithium production.
Specifications of Tesla Semi variants
The Tesla Semi is an all-electric, Class 8 heavy-duty truck designed to replace traditional diesel semi-trailers. First unveiled in 2017, the company aimed for production in 2019. Unfortunately, the production targets suffered years of delay. Eventually, in 2022, Tesla finally delivered a handful units to PepsiCo.
The Semi comes in two distinct configurations: Standard Range and Long Range. The former version is capable of delivering 325 miles at a fully-loaded weight of 82,000 pounds. The latter delivers 500 miles at the same fully loaded weight.
Both versions are equipped with a three-motor powertrain, capable of delivering up to 800kW. They also include an electric power take-off (ePTO) outputting up to 25 kW.
Batteries are designed to last one million miles in their original duty cycle. Standard range comes with an estimated battery capacity of 550kWh and the Long Range has battery capacity of around 875 kWh.
When it comes to charging time, the 60 percent of its range can be completed in just 30 minutes. One can charge then through an MCS 3.2 connector at up to 1.2 megawatts.
Features
The electric truck was recently updated with a front-end design similar to the Model Y. The cabin layout includes a central seating position for the driver with two large flanking touchscreens. The rear of the cab contains a second seat. The vehicle is without airbags due to specific US regulatory standards.
Pricing range
Standard Range will cost around $260,000 and Long Range is priced at $290,000.
Mass production of the Semi is now underway, with deliveries scheduled to begin later in 2026.
