As King Charles is set for the four-day state visit to the United States, royal experts shared their insights into what discussions could take place during the monarch's meeting with the Donald Trump.

Speaking with Vanity Fair, the royal historian Ed Owens shared that Charles is expected to play a non-political role in order to reinforce historic ties between the UK and the US.

To note, the trip comes at a delicate time for US-UK relations, strained by disagreements over Iran, Ukraine, NATO commitments and trade policy. Moreover, Trump and Keir Starmer have publicly clashed over several issues, raising concerns about the future of the long-standing relationship between the two allies.

Owens said, "[King Charles] can’t talk politics explicitly, or take sides, but he can use his role as a statesman to exercise soft power. This trip is a visit with potential pit falls, but Charles is not going to be engaging in the breakdown of the relationship between President Trump and Sir Keir Starmer. He will be talking about the bigger picture and the relationship and history between America and the UK."

He went on to add, "I would be very surprised if the King made any reference to the tensions between the White House and Whitehall. He will be taking the long view and talking in bigger terms about the relationship between two countries that has been very close since the first World War. It’s a special relationship for many reasons. It’s a relationship that goes back nearly 100 years and is valued on both sides of the Atlantic both in politics — many members in Congress will want this relationship to endure — and among the American and British public."

Notably, Owens stated that this may be the opportunity for King Charles and the monarchy to "shine," adding, "While the King has had a difficult start to his reign with family fallouts, and a cancer diagnosis and then Andrew’s downfall, he has performed well internationally. I would argue he has defined himself as a monarch who is more potent perhaps internationally than in the UK."

"The world is an uncertain place. The Royal Family has sought to re-emphasize the importance of international cooperation and that’s very important for the world to see," the expert added.
