OpenAI launches GPT-5.5: A giant leap toward the AI ‘super app’
GPT-5.5 is designed for versatility, supporting core enterprise functions such as agentic coding
OpenAI has officially announced its newest AI model, GPT-5.5, in a major move that the company describes as one of its smartest and most innovative models to date.
The prime motive behind this release is the algorithm’s increased capabilities across a multitude of areas. According to the OpenAI co-founder and president Greg Brockman, this represents a significant step closer to the creation of OpenAI’s “super application.”
During a call with journalists, Brockman has shared his remarks that the new model represents a giant leap toward technological advancement, specifically in agentic and intuitive computing. GPT-5.5 is designed for versatility across various sectors, including foundational enterprise areas such as agentic coding and knowledge management-fields that remain highly innovative.
OpenAI clarified that the model’s performance has surpassed all previous benchmarks, making it highly competitive against rival models from Google and Anthropic.
“This model is a real step forward towards the kind of computing that we expect in the future — but it is one step, and we expect to see many in the future,” Brockman said. “It’s a faster, sharper thinker for fewer tokens compared to something like 5.4. So, this means that there’s just more frontier AI available for businesses and for consumers, which is part of our goal.”
The rivalry between OpenAI and Anthropic continues to intensify with the launch of GPT-5.5, a model designed to compete with Anthropic’s recently released cybersecurity tool, Mythos.
In response to questions about Anthropic’s Mythos, OpenAI underscores its own long-standing strategy for digital defense.
Technical staff member Mia Glasese stated that OpenAI has refined a durable approach to rolling out models safely to ensure they are used responsibly for cybersecurity tasks. Chief Research Officer Mark Chen highlighted that GPT-5.5 shows meaningful gains in scientific and technical research.
The model is significantly better at navigating computer-based work and specialized workflows compared to its predecessors. OpenAI specifically noted the model’s potential to assist in drug discovery, a high-interest area for the tech and pharmaceutical industries.
The model is deploying to Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise users within ChatGPT, while GPT-5.5 Pro will be accessible to Pro, Business, and Enterprise subscribers.
