Trump extends ceasefire with Iran ahead of deadline as talks Pakistan are stalled
Trump said the decision was taken while a proposal to permanently end the conflict is being prepared
US President Donald Trump has extended the ceasefire with Iran just one day before it was set to expire, as Pakistan’s efforts to secure a longer-term agreement continue.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump said the decision was taken while a proposal to permanently end the conflict is being prepared.
He added that the extension came amid instability within Iran’s leadership, describing the government as “seriously fractured”, and noted that Pakistani officials had requested the move.
Despite the extension, Trump confirmed that the United States would continue its blockade of Iranian ports, signalling that pressure on Tehran remains in place.
Earlier in the day, the president told a television interviewer that he was prepared to resume military action if no deal was reached before the original Wednesday deadline.
Plans for a second round of talks in Islamabad have now been shelved. According to a White House official, Vice President JD Vance’s expected trip to Pakistan was cancelled following Trump’s announcement.
Vance had been due to lead a US delegation alongside special envoy Steve Witkoff and senior adviser Jared Kushner.
