Lorne Michaels set to run 'Saturday Night Live' for 'another 50 years'?
Lorne Michaels has been working on 'Saturday Night Live' for approximately 50 years
Morgan Neville has articulated some thoughts about what will happen if Lorne Michaels decides to bid farewell to Saturday Night Live.
The 58-year-old American filmmaker chatted with PEOPLE magazine to promote Saturday Night Live creator’s documentary Lorne, which he directed and released on April 17, 2026.
He discussed the late-night live sketch comedy variety show, especially the future of it if Michaels retires from it.
Neville said, “I don't know if he's ever really gonna choose to retire because he is the show and the show is him, but he's not gonna run the show for another 50 years.”
The director of Roadrunner went on to add, “I think he cares about the show. He wants the show to continue on into the future;” however, he thinks now “it’s gonna have to be a couple of people to do his job.”
“I don't think it's one person because I think he does so many different things,” Neville quipped, adding, “Chiefly, he manages the funny people.”
“It’s the managing down, the writers and the comedians, but he's also managing up. It's all the network people and the sponsors, and that is such a complex game,” he noted.
It is pertinent to mention that Lorne Michaels has been serving as an executive producer of Saturday Night Live for almost 5 decades, as the show debuted in 1977.
