What is WhatsApp Plus? How the new subscription tier differs from the free version

WhatsApp is significantly expanding its revenue strategy with the launch of WhatsApp Plus, a new optional subscription tier now appearing for beta testers on Android.
The latest rollout first reported on Monday, April 20, follows the recent debut of “Instagram Plus” as part of a broader push to monetize Meta’s “Family of Apps.” Unlike professional tools, WhatsApp Plus focuses heavily on personalization and organization.
According to reports from WABetaInfo, subscribers gain access to 18 new chat themes and 14 alternative app icons. The ability to pin up to 20 chats is a massive jump from the free tier’s limit of three.
Additionally, premium animated stickers with full-screen effects and 10 unique ringtones are included. Users can enjoy advanced “ Custom Lists” to categorize and bulk-manage chat groups. Meta is opting for a “low-cost” model to encourage mass adoption among its 3.3 billion users.
In terms of its pricing, users can expect to cost around $2.99 per month. While adjusting for purchasing power, costing approximately PKR 229 in Pakistan and MXN $29 in Mexico.
The core message including end-to-end encryption and voice calls remains free. While currently limited to a small percentage of Android beta testers, a global rollout to iOS and desktop platforms is expected later this year Meta gathers feedback from this initial phase.
There is currently no official announcement on when WhatsApp Plus will be available for its public release.
