Justice Department shake-up: Pam Bondi ousted as attorney general despite close ties to Trump

Donald Trump reportedly announced that Pam Bondi is stepping down as the US Attorney General, despite her efforts to reshape the Justice Department. However, reports suggest the primary reasons for her departure where the president’s discontent over her handling of the Jefrey Epstein and his continued focus on pursuing political adversaries. While the President’s public statement on Truth Social was characteristically laudatory-calling her a “Great American Patriot” and a loyal friend-reports indicate that Bondi was effectively fired following months of internal friction.

Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social: “Pam Bondi is a Great American Patriot and a loyal friend, who faithfully served as my Attorney General over the past year.”

“We love Pam, and she will be transitioning to a much needed and important new job in the private sector, to be announced at a date in the near future.”

Donald Trump has named Todd Blanche, his former personal lawyer and current Deputy Attorney General, as the acting attorney general. He has privately discussed Lee Zeldin as a permanent candidate for the role.

Pam Bondi is stepping down after 14 months, stating she will spend the next month transitioning the position to Blanche. Critics including Senator Adam Schiff and Representative Jamie Raskin accused Bondi of turning the DOJ into a tool for Trump’s personal and political interests.

Her actions led to the resignations of hundreds of employees and concerns over the erosion of the rule of law. Under Bondi, the DOJ opened investigations into Trump’s political foes, including Jerome Powell, Letitia James, and James Comey. She rejected claims of politicization, arguing her mission was to restore credibility to the DOJ following what she described as “overreach” by the Biden administration.

While Trump praised her, he also expressed impatience, publicly demanding on social media that she move faster to prosecute his rivals to protect the administration’s credibility. Bondi suggested in 2025 that an Epstein client list existed on her desk, though the DOJ later admitted no such document existed.

She was criticized for handing out binders of Epstein files to conservative influencers that contained no new information. The fumble of the Epstein files led to a subpoena from a GOP-led House committee and rare public criticism from White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles, who said Bondi had completely whiffed on the matter. Survivors of Jeffrey Epstein expressed deep disappointment, stating Bondi chose not to do right by victims of sexual violence.

Bondi was appointed after Trump’s initial pick, Matt Gaetz, withdrew his name due to scrutiny over sex trafficking allegations. In addition, Bondi had previously served as part of Trump’s legal defense team during his first impeachment trial.
